The Many Saints of Newark (A Sopranos Story) is an upcoming film that follows the teenage years of Tony Soprano growing up while a violent gang war involves his Italian-American family battling in a struggle for control of neighborhoods with African-American communities.

The American crime drama film directed by Alan Taylor and written by HBO The Soprano’s David Chase and Lawrence Konner is a prequel to the highly successful HBO crime drama series The Sopranos, complete with Satriale’s Pork Store Meat Market.

The Many Saints of Newark (A Sopranos Story) stars Alessandro Nivola, Leslie Odom Jr., Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Michael Gandolfini, Billy Magnussen, Michela De Rossi, John Magaro, Ray Liotta, and Vera Farmiga. Set in the 1960s and 1970s in Newark, New Jersey, using the 1967 riots in the city as a backdrop for tensions between the Italian-American and African-American communities.

Michael Gandolfini is James Gandolfini’s son and plays the character of the teenaged Anthony Soprano as grows up in one of the most tumultuous eras in Newark’s history. He becomes a man wanting to go to college, but surround by bad influences as rival gangsters begin to rise up and challenge the all-powerful DiMeo crime family’s hold over the increasingly race-torn city. Also caught up in the changing times is the uncle he idolizes, Dickie Moltisanti, who struggles to manage both his professional and personal responsibilities—and whose influence over his nephew will help make the impressionable teenager into the all-powerful mob boss we came to know in the HBO series The Sopranos: Tony Soprano. Dickie Molitisanti is Christopher Moltisanti’s father. According to IMDb, Ray Liotta plays “Hollywood” Dick Moltisanti, Dickie’s father and Christopher’s grandfather — a character that was never mentioned in the HBO series.

Initially release of the film was scheduled for September 25, 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic pushed back the release date to October 1, 2021, including a month-long simultaneous release on the HBO Max streaming service.
