Police from Wheeling and Prospect Heights, and firefighters and paramedics from Wheeling responded about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2021 to a report of a crash with injuries involving a semi-trailer truck and a Lexus passenger vehicle at the Palatine Road express lanes and Wheeling Road in Wheeling near Prospect Heights.
Wheeling Fire Department paramedics on arrival assessed and treated an 18 year-old female driver of the Lexus, which had severe damage on the driver’s side. The female driver was transported by Wheeling Fire Department paramedics to Glenbrook Hospital with injuries initially believed to be non-life-threatening. Her father on the scene said the semi-trailer truck driver was eastbound in the express lanes of Palatine Road, and attempted to make a left turn in front of the oncoming Lexus. The driver of the Lexus was able to avoid a head-on crash, but was involved in a strong glancing crash with the front of the truck that impacted the driver’s side of the Lexus.
The driver of the truck was not transported to the hospital by paramedics, and it was initially unknown whether the truck driver reported any injuries.
The Speed Limit on the eastbound express lanes of Palatine Road is 45 MPH just before Wheeling Road, and the Speed Limit on the westbound express lanes of Palatine Road is 45 MPH according to Google Maps street images captured September 2019. No turns are allowed from the express lanes at the intersection.
If skid marks on Palatine Road were fresh, it appeared the truck driver slammed on the brakes before completing the turn onto northbound Wheeling Road.
The intersection, which has Red Light Photo Enforcement Camera for eastbound Palatine Road, was cleared by police from Wheeling and Prospect Heights by 11:30 a.m.
