As of July 4, 2021, 24 people were confirmed dead because of a partial building collapse of a 12-story beachfront condominium with a penthouse and underground parking garage. The partial collapse at 8777 Collins Avenue (Florida State Road A1A) in the Surfside Florida, which occurred at 1:25 a.m. June 24, 2021, injured 11 people and caused at least 121 people remain missing for 11 days. At least half of the 136 units in the building were destroyed in the initial partial collapse.

The demolition of the remaining standing portion of Champlain Towers South occurred at 10:30 p.m. EDT on Sunday, July 4, 2021.

The controlled demolition of Sunday, July 4, 2021 was expected to bring the standing structure to collapse mostly into the current footprint where the remaining standing building existed. Debris falling outside that footprint was expected to fall on the west side onto Collins Avenue. The purpose of the controlled demolition was to avoid disturbing the existing search and rescue zone on the east ahead of the arrival of a Tropical Storm Elsa.. The search for survivors of the initial collapse resumed immediately after the demolition was completed.
