Cook County Sheriff’s deputies and police, firefighters and paramedics from Palatine responded about 10:43 p.m. Thursday, March 4, 2021 to a report that a shooting victim was found in a car in the block of 1900 North High Grove Lane near Gardenia Lane in Palatine. Minutes later Cook County Sheriff’s deputies and paramedics also responded to the block of 1500 Silver Lane near Norway Lane in Palatine Township to a report of a second shooting.

Police apparently found no second shooting victim at Silver Lane, but learned that the shooting victim found on High Grove Lane was shot at a crime scene in the Silver Lane parking lot of the Silver Lakes apartment complex. Suffering from at least one mortal gunshot wound, a Chicago resident was able to drive away, but didn’t get far. He drove his car until he pulled into a residential driveway on High Grove Lane, where his condition worsened. The shooting victim died two days later. There were two crime scenes investigated overnight late Thursday to Friday morning: 1) Silver Lane south of Norway Lane, and 2) High Grove Lane south of Gardenia Lane.

The initial police investigation by Cook County Sheriff’s investigators concluded that the shooting occurred during a confrontation between a marijuana seller and a prospective buyer outside the Silver Lakes apartment complex about 10:40 p.m. Thursday March 4, 2021 in the block of 1500 Silver Lane. The apartment complex is located south of Dundee Road and west of Route 53 — close to the southwest part of the Route 53 – Dundee Road interchange in an unincorporated area in Palatine Township.

Police were told that a 27-year-old man was waiting in a vehicle outside his apartment at Silver Lakes to purchase marijuana from a 29 year-old man. Allegedly, the 29 year-old “seller” arrived in a vehicle in the parking lot along Silver Lane south of Norway Lane. When the 29 year-old “marijuana seller” got into the buyer’s car, he allegedly pointed a gun at the 27-year-old buyer and announced a robbery.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office indicates that both subjects exited the car during a struggle. The 27-year-old buyer also pulled out his own gun, and shot the 29-year-old in the groin, according to Cook County Sheriff’s police.

The initial police investigation and the ongoing investigation has involved sorting out what led to the shooting; whether there was an actual attempted robbery, who was buying and who was selling, and who was robbing who.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office investigation indicates that after the shooting, the 27-year-old “buyer” walked back to his apartment; and the 29-year-old “seller” drove away in his vehicle and ended up at the address on High Grove Lane near Gardenia Lane. Initially, there was some confusion whether the 27 year-old was also shot, and another paramedic crew responded to the Silver Lane address, while the first paramedic crew was treating the 29 year-old “seller” who had driven about one mile northwest of the shooting scene to the area of High Grove Lane and Gardenia Lane.

Palatine police and Palatine Fire Department paramedics responded to a report of a shooting victim inside a vehicle after the shooting victim crashed his small white sedan and pulled onto a lawn in the block of 1900 High Grove Lane. He was treated at the scene and transported by paramedics to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

The shooting victim was identified as William Nellum, age 29, a resident of Chicago. Nellum, of the block of 11800 South Yale Avenue in Chicago, was pronounced dead shortly after 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 6, 2021.

After an autopsy, the Cook County medical examiner’s office on Saturday, March 6, 2021, ruled the death a homicide from a gunshot wound to the right lower extremity.

The Cook Count Sheriff’s Office did not initially report that any criminal charges were filed, but indicated the investigation is ongoing.
