A large fire erupted at a pallet yard in an industrial area of Compton early Friday morning, sparking transformer explosions which lit up the sky as the blaze spread to a nearby bus yard, shutting down streets and forcing nearby evacuations. Tina Patel, CBS Los Angeles, reports. YouTube Tips ⓘ

Compton firefighters and LA County Sheriff’s Deputies (Compton Station) responded about 4:34 a.m. Friday, February 26, 2021 to a report of a fire in a pallet yard at North Santa Fe Avenue and East Weber Avenue in Compton, California. Initially no injuries were reported, but during firefighting operations lasting over three hours a firefighter injured an ankle.

The fire at H & H Paletts & Repair Services, 538 East Weber Avenue spread south and then east and west inside the yards south of Weber Avenue.




Several buses burned in the parking lot at a bus charter company, TLC Luxury Transportation Los Angeles 522-524 East Weber Avenue in Compton.

Several other business burned and a Matrix Mattresses was threatened just to the south of the fire scene. A witness reported the fire spread to the mattress company. A recycling business with bales stored outside was also located nearby but was not threatened with fire.

About 20 large buses were destroyed and about 12 structures were damaged or destroyed. Local media described firefighters doing a tremendous job saving nearby residential structures.

There are some residential structures near the fire scene, and a large area of residential neighborhoods and an elementary school are located just east of the fire scene — east of Santa Fe Avenue.




Winds at 4:53 a.m. at nearby Hawthorne Municipal Airport Thursday February 26, 2021 were calm (“North”). Air Temperature was 48°F with a dew point of 24°F and a Relative Humidity of 39%. Winds remain calm or light 3-5 MPH West until around noon, and increased slightly (9-12 MPH) during the afternoon. There was no precipitation and skies were clear. A large vertical smoke plume was visible for several miles.

There were some water supply problems and extinguishment of the fire took about 3 hours. One firefighters suffered a minor ankle injury, according to CBS Los Angeles.




Compton Fire Department does not have an official Facebook or Twitter account, and did not provide any live updates regarding the large fire scene. The fire department has an Instagram account, but did not provide any updates via Instagram.

The official Facebook account for the City of Compton did not provide any mention of the major fire, recommendations or safety messages, or assurances about the incident.

The City of Compton at the time of this major fire incident had not updated their Twitter account since August 7, 2020.

The fire is under investigation by the Fire Department Arson Team according to Fire Chief Ronerick Simpson. There is an initial report that a fire started to keep people warm at a homeless encampment in an alley may have spread to the pallets.
