On Thursday, February 4, 2021, at approximately 2:15 p.m., Lake Villa Police Officers were dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of Briar Ridge Lane, Lake Villa, to check on the well-being of a child. The mother of a nine-year-old female called Lake Villa Police to check on her daughter, as her daughter was absent from school. Lake Villa Police Officers entered the home and found the nine-year-old deceased and the girl’s father, a 36-year-old man, deceased.

Preliminary investigation shows the child’s mother and father live separately but share custody of the girl. This incident occurred at the father’s residence in the 100 block of Briar Ridge Lane. Yesterday, the child’s mother agreed to allow the girl to stay with her father overnight. When the girl was not in attendance at school today, the mother attempted to call the father. After several attempts of not being able to reach the father, the mother called Lake Villa Police to conduct a well-being check.

Based on the facts and circumstances obtained thus far, this is being investigated as a murder-suicide. Preliminary information suggests the father took his daughter’s life before taking his own.

Due to the nature of the incident, Lake Villa Police requested the assistance of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force. The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded and is in the process of scheduling autopsies on the child and the child’s father.

Lake Villa Chief Craig Somerville said, “This is an incredibly tragic set of circumstance and our deepest condolences go out to the family of the child. I want to reassure the Lake Villa community that there is no evidence to suggest there is a threat to the public.”

The incident remains under investigation by members of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force and Lake Villa Police Department.
