According to EATER Washington DC — a hyperlocal food blog in the Vox Media network — Micheline Mendelsohn Luhn, deputy CEO for the restaurant group that owns We the Pizza, says the pizza shop received an order from a member of Congress and offered to donate as many pies as they sold. All in all, that accounted for 100 pizzas on Wednesday, January 14, 2021. We the Pizza, located at 305 East Pennsylvania Avenue SE and about one-half mile southeast of the US Capitol, planned to send another 75 pizzas Thursday morning and 75 more Thursday night.

Republican representatives Vicky Hartzler (Missouri) and Michael Waltz (Florida) were photographed by Tom Williams (CQ-Roll Call) distributing pizzas from the We the Pizza nearby on Pennsylvania Avenue SE.

Micheline Mendelsohn Luhn said she also coordinated meals for the National Guard from Buffalo & Bergen, Chiko, Maketto, the Duck and the Peach, District Doughnuts, Pizzeria Paradiso, and the Sticky Fingers bakery.

“Help feed the National Guard Troops in DC protecting our Democracy. These pizzas will be delivered to the National Guard at the Capitol Building. “We are in this together” has been the motto of We, The Pizza for the past 10 years. We are a community and will be working with other restaurants in the area to provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner so the troops have a variety. Buffalo & Bergen, CHIKO, District Doughnuts, The Duck and The Peach, Maketto, Pizzeria Paradiso and RIS. We will be matching every pie that is donated.”

We the Pizza set up a donor page referred on their We the Pizza official website.

$12 feeds four troops, $25 feeds eight troops … $300 feeds 100 troops.

“Our Chefs craft dough with 100% white whole wheat flour milled solely from pure, natural goodness of winter wheat from the northern Great Plains. Our tomato sauce gets its velvety, full flavor and super deep red color from the tomatoes grown by the Pastini family.

Our fresh herbs are sourced from a small farm in Shenandoah Valley and all our pizzas and salads are garnished with our authentic tree-to-table virgin olive oil.

Our creamy Fiore di Latte mozzarella cheese is made with farm fresh organic milk and hand spun in our very own workshop. Our premium meats are sourced from family farms- our sausage is from family made Logans sausage from Alexandria, VA.

Our soda jerks work modern-day miracles on our American Soda Fountain. We use only natural spring soda with a splash of crushed fruit, homemade syrups and a garnish.

Homemade Italian gelato is churned every morning in house to make delicious creamy shakes. Topped with Bada Bing cherries over Cherry Amaretto or shaved chocolate on top of our Tiramisu or toasted hazelnuts on our Nutella shake, these classic Italian flavors come to life.”

The good news coming out of acts by Republican representatives Vicky Hartzler (Missouri) and Michael Waltz (Florida) was countered as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said House Republicans are abusing National Guard troops at metal detector checkpoints. “It is tragic that this step (metal detectors) is necessary, but the Chamber of the People’s House must and will be safe. Many House Republicans have disrespected our heroes by verbally abusing them and refusing to adhere to basic precautions.”

Metal detectors were set up outside the House chamber following the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Some Republican lawmakers have expressed their displeasure about the new security protocol, and have been bypassing the metal detector entirely or walking through and not stopping when they set it off, according to an Associated Press article.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is proposing fines of up to $10,000 charged against members who fail to abide by the security protocols of the House.
