Elk Grove Village firefighters and paramedics and Cook County Forest Preserve police responded about 11:32 a.m. Tuesday, January 13, 2021 to Busse Woods near Grove 2 to a report that a worker was hit by a falling tree limb as workers were cutting down or trimming trees.

Upon arrival firefighters and paramedics discovered that an injured male worker in his 30s was located about three-quarters to a mile off a paved road or trail while he was clearing dead trees and underbrush from Busse Woods. He was hit by the falling tree branch, but initially did not appear to be seriously injured. Paramedics treated the man and devised a plan to safely transport him to an ambulance waiting the significant distance away. An extra ambulance was dispatched in case the first ambulance was stranded on the icy path.

An ATV fire department crew was assigned to transport the man out of the deep woods, but the path was obstructed by cut logs. Also, in some areas the underbrush in the forest was too thick for the ATV to access the injured man. Firefighters had to improvise and carry the man out while walking to an awaiting ambulance. The firefighters and paramedics reached the ambulance with their patient about 12:29 p.m. He was transported to Amita Health Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village with injuries initially believed to be non-life-threatening.

One or more fire department vehicles were stranded by ice conditions and other conditions, and a fleet crew from Elk Grove Village was requested to assist in the recovery of the fire department vehicles.

The injured man was working with a crew contracted by the Cook County Forest Preserve District.
