The Chicago Teachers Union AFT-IFT Local #1 said Sunday, January 24, 2021 that its members voted to defy an order to return to the classroom over concerns about COVID-19.

The union position is that the district’s safety plan falls short and wants teachers to wait until safety at schools improves, and that vaccinations be more widespread.

District officials have said that refusing to return to work when ordered would amount to an illegal strike.
