Zion Police Officers Respond to Two Shooting Incidents Overnight Saturday to Sunday; 4 Gunshot Victims from First Incident

Two incidents involving the firing of weapons occurred after midnight into very early Sunday morning in Zion. The first incident involved gunshot wounds, but no injuries were reported in the second incident.

Zion Police Department police officer responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting “shots fired” at 12:57 a.m. Sunday, August 30, 2020 in the block of 2300 Joppa Avenue. Upon arrival, Zion police officers discovered four people with gunshot wounds. Police officers discovered a 28-year old male from Zion with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, another 28-year old male from Zion with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, an 8-year-old male from Zion with a gunshot wound to the hand, and a 35-year old male from Zion with a gunshot wound to a shoulder and a second gunshot wound to a leg.




A friend transported the 35 year-old to Vista Medical Center East where he was treated and released. Zion Fire & Rescue transported both of the 28-year old victims to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center. Both gunshot victims underwent surgery and were listed in critical but stable condition later on Sunday.

Family transported the 8-year old to Vista Medical Center East where he was also treated and released.

The initial investigation indicates that a newer model, dark colored SUV, occupied by at least three subjects, passed by when passengers from the front and back seat fired at the adult victims as they were standing outside the residence. The 8-year old was struck when one of the rounds penetrated the residence and struck him in his bedroom.

Zion police officers located fifteen .223 caliber spent shell casings, six .40 caliber shell casings and six 9mm shell casings. Officers recovered two loaded 9mm handguns at the scene.

Zion police officer heard the second incident while they were investigating the first incident.

The second incident occurred in the block of 1900 Jethro Avenue at approximately 1:40 a.m. Zion police officers were collecting evidence at the first shooting when they heard a large number of gunshots coming from north and east of their location.

Officers located a 41-year old female from Zion in the block of 1900 Jethro Avenue just over one-half mile away. She reported that she was backing out of her driveway when an unknown subject fired 3 bullets into her car. Officers located fifteen bullet holes in the vehicle, nine 9mm fired casings, three live 9mm rounds and seven .25 caliber fired casings at the scene. In addition, a wallet with large amount of cash was found on scene and a large bag of cannabis was located in the vehicle. No one was injured in this incident.
