More than 50 cars were involved in a massive pileup crash on the inbound Kennedy Expressway at North Avenue in just one of more than a dozen crashes reported Wednesday morning.
Illinois State Police and police and firefighter/paramedics from Chicago responded about 4:45 a.m. Wednesday, April 15, 2020 to a report of a serious crash with a vehicle fire on the inbound Kennedy Expressway at 1600 North near North Avenue. An EMS Plan 1 was activated about 4:56 a.m. by Battalion 3. A pin-in response and an EMS Plan 2 was activated at about 4:59 a.m.
The first crew in the area reported a gridlock back to Armitage Avenue.

Battalion 3 reported 30 vehicles involved at 5:02 a.m. with no Code Red patients discovered. The pin-in response was held up by 5:02 a.m. as two patients (conscious and talking) in a heavily damaged vehicle were extricated.
Paramedics were systematically evaluating multiple crash victims. Most people were initially expected to be medical refusals, but some were undecided during triage.
Later the count was updated to 54 vehicles.
