CBS 2’s Steven Graves reports the nation’s biggest mall owner is closing all its U.S. properties because of the coronavirus.

The Simon Property Group, whose properties include Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, announced Wednesday afternoon that it will shut its doors Wednesday night March 18, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. The Simon Property Group properties in the Chicago area include Chicago Premium outlet in Aurora, Gurnee Mills, Orland Square in Orland Park and Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg.

“Simon will close all of its retail properties, including Malls, Premium Outlets and Mills in the U.S. This measure will take effect from 7:00 p.m. local time today and will end on March 29,” according to a Simon Property Group news release.

“The health and safety of our shoppers, retailers and employees is of paramount importance and we are taking this step to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 in our communities.”

Fashion Outlets of Chicago in Rosemont, owned by the Macerich development company, has not yet announced a closure.

Some other stores had already closed at Woodfield Mall, ahead of the Simon Property Group closure of the entire mall.
