Thomas Tansey has been charged in the stabbing that killed Kenny Paterimos. CBS 2’s Jermont Terry reports.

A suspect who was arrested and charged with murder this week in Chicago — about 12 days after he allegedly stabbed a barista outside Richard’s Bar on Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago — was also arrested suspected of DUI in downtown Arlington Heights at Northwest Highway and Dunton Avenue in Arlington Heights on December 21, 2019.

A Cook County judge denied bail for Thomas Tansey, age 30, charged with first-degree murder for the alleged fatal stabbing a 23-year-old barista, Kenneth Paterimos, outside Richard’s Bar in the West Town neighborhood Chicago.

Tansey was initially arrested February 21, 2020 after allegedly stabbing Paterimos multiple times outside the Richard’s Bar in the block of 400 North Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago. Tansey was reportedly intoxicated in the bar and was escorted outside. Paterimos followed Tansey outside to the street, and a fight ensued, which ultimately ended with Kenneth Paterimos being stabbed to death. After the stabbing, Tansey was restrained by citizens until police arrived.

Police detained Tansey at the scene, but later released him after prosecutors instructed CPD detectives to further investigate Tansey’s self-defense claim, and police needed more than 48 hours to find evidence to refute the self-defense claim.

However, an arrest warrant for Thomas Tansey was issued Thursday, February 27, 2020 in connection with the stabbing death of Kenneth Paterimos. Tansey was arrested on Wednesday, March 4, 2020 just after 11:30 a.m. when he was taken into custody after his release from a hospital on West Harrison Street near Ashland Avenue in Chicago’s Medical District.

According to court records history from 2016-2017, Tansey was convicted of battery — accused of battering a man, pushing the victim to the ground, and trying to hit him with a gun during an incident in the afternoon on December 12, 2016 on Walnut Avenue near Kingsbury Drive in a residential neighborhood in Arlington Heights. Tansey was arrested January 17, 2017 at Arlington Heights Police Department headquarters, apparently after arriving at the police station on his own. He was charged with “Battery/Bodily Harm” and “Carrying/Possessing a Firearm.”

Also, on Saturday, December 21, 2019, Thomas H. Tansey was arrested at 9:27 p.m. after a report of a vehicle vs pedestrian incident at about 9:02 p.m. involving an injured pedestrian in downtown Arlington Heights at Northwest Highway and Dunton Avenue. Tansey was charged with driving under the influence (DUI/alcohol) by Arlington Heights police officers, according to the Arlington Heights Police Department. A black Chevy Colorado pickup truck was towed to a police holing area.

In the same time frame, CARDINAL NEWS video captured an arrest of a male adult following a field sobriety test and a Portable Breathalyzer Test at the southwest corner of Northwest Highway and Dunton Avenue near the Metra train station in downtown Arlington Heights.

Suspected DUI alcohol arrest at Northwest Highway and Dunton Ave Arlington Heights on Saturday, December 21, 2019.
