A female suspect who worked as a bookkeeper and receptionist at a dental office in Arlington Heights pleaded guilty Tuesday December 3, 2019 to embezzling more than $600,000 from a dental office over six years.

Caren B. Irsuto, 56, of Schiller Park, was sentenced to six years in prison in exchange for her guilty plea to aggravated identity theft and theft at Favia Family Dental on Northwest Highway in Arlington Heights.

Caren Irsuto’s husband, Scott Irsuto, 59, also of Schiller Park, pleaded guilty to theft. He was sentenced to 24 months probation in exchange for pleading guilty to theft.

Dr. Joe Favia noticed the theft in early 2016 when Cook County prosecutors say he observed an increase in business with no corresponding increase in revenue. Favia subsequently fired Caren Irsuto and hired a consultant, prosecutors said. Dr. Favia, a resident of Arlington Heights, noticed the Irsutos in the dental office parking lot at Northwest Highway and Pine Avenue on a subsequent Sunday when he happened to drive by the dental office. Favia called Irsuto to inquire why she was at the property, but he never saw her again, prosecutors said.

Dr. Joe Favia notified the Arlington Heights Police Department on April 28, 2016 that a former employee had embezzled approximately $60,000 from the company.

During the course of an investigation by the Arlington Heights Police Department it was learned the former employee, Caren B. Irsuto, with the assistance of her husband, Scott A. Irsuto, were endorsing and cashing checks made payable to the business for services rendered. In total, the couple embezzled over $500,000.00 from the business using various banks and currency exchanges. Prosecutors said the couple cashed the checks at currency exchanges, a gas station and a local bar; and deposited the money in a bank account.

Eventually, Favia discovered Caren Irsuto failed to deposit 1,464 checks totaling $625,526.23 appropriately for the dental office, prosecutors said.
