Niles police responded about 3:22 a.m. September 22, 2019 to reports of shots fired at the Music Box Club located at 6873 North Milwaukee Avenue. The Music Box Club is located at the former location of Capone’s Hideout and the Village Cafe and Pub on Milwaukee Avenue about two blocks south of Touhy Avenue.

Upon arrival investigating officers learned that the shooting occurred outside in the parking lot, where an unknown male black, with a black jacket and hoodie fired a small handgun approximately six times towards the the Music Box Club. The shooter fled on foot southbound on Milwaukee Avenue, according to the Niles Police Department.

Witnesses also reported that an altercation between multiple subjects occurred inside the club. During that altercation a female in her 20’s suffered a laceration to her leg. Niles firefighter/paramedics were dispatched about 3:38 p.m. The female who suffered the laceration was treated and released at the scene by the Niles Fire Department. A second person may also have been evaluated by firefighter/paramedics.

Niles Police Department reported that initially there were no reports of any victims being injured by gunfire.

Milwaukee Avenue was closed from Harts Road to Albion while the investigation was underway. The shots fired call and altercation calls were classified by Niles Police Department as part of an active investigation as of Sunday at 5:10 a.m.

Niles trustees on August 23, 2016 voted 5-0 to approve the opening of the Music Box with a special use permit for a full-service restaurant and cocktail lounge. Business and residential neighbors opposed especially the plans for an outdoor patio space, with one opponent claiming that patrons at the prior business were on record for behavior outdoors that included drinking and screaming while running from lot to lot, urinating, and sex outdoors.

An attorney for the Music Box told trustees that trustees that the establishment will cater to an older crowd, specifically individuals in their 50s and 60s. A residential neighborhood of Niles taxpaying citizens with single-family homes is located less than 110 feet directly northeast of The Music Box Club building and less than 10 feet from the establishments parking lot.

Nile Police Department urges anyone with information about the incident to contact the Niles Police Department, Detective Bureau at 847-588-6570.
