CTA BROWN LINE AND PURPLE LINE SERVICE HALTED NEAR SEDGWICK

Police and firefighter/paramedics from Chicago responded about 9:15 a.m. Tuesday September 24, 2019 to a report of a CTA passenger train derailment — possibly a Brown Line CTA Train — at 1536 Sedgwick.

First firefighters on the scene reported a train stopped and tilting slightly to the side. A second update from firefighters on the scene indicated a possible minor collision involving two trains west of the Sedgwick CTA station. Many of the train cars are on the sharp curve near the Lincoln Park Center parking garage.

Chicago Fire Department has activated a Still and Box Alarm and an EMS Plan 1. Fire units initially staged at North Avenue and Clark Street, but staging was changed to North Avenue and Halsted Street about 9:30 a.m.

Investigators are checking whether there was an actual collision. At a press conference, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman and a CTA spokesman said there was no collision.

CTA first tweeted “collision” at 9:47 am.
[Service Disruption] Brown Line service has been temporarily suspended between Fullerton and Merchandise Mart due to a collision involving two trains near Sedgwick.

North Avenue vehicle traffic was backing up in both directions and police may be blocking North Avenue at Halsted Street.

14 Passengers Transported to Area Hospitals
Paramedics were evaluating passengers, and there initially did not appear to be any injuries at 9:40 a.m. At 10:35 Chicago Fire Department reported that 12 passengers were being transported “Code Green” to area hospitals. Patients were transported to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, St. Joseph Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital, and Norwegian American Hospital. About ten minutes later Chicago Fire Department reported an additional two patients were being transported “Code Green.”

Firefighters reported about 9:50 a.m. that there was no train derailment.
