VIDEO: Accident investigation for pedestrian hit by vehicle in Elk Grove Village on Biesterfield Road south of Arlington Heights Road.

Elk Grove Village police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 8:44 PM Wednesday, August 21, 2019 to a report of a man hit by a car on Arlington Heights Road south of Biesterfield Road by Elk Grove Theatre.

Police and firefighter/paramedics on arrival found an older male adult unresponsive in the northbound lanes of Arlington Heights Road near the driveway of the Classic Cinemas Elk Grove Theatre.

Witnesses on the scene said that paramedics administered CPR and treated the man on the street at the scene for a short time, and then transported him to the hospital.

The man was transported by Elk Grove Village firefighter/paramedics to Amita Health Alexian Brothers Medical Center on Biesterfield Road less than a mile away, where he was pronounced dead at 9:07 p.m. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office initially only described the victim as an 84 year-old male from Elk Grove Village, pending notification of his family.

Elk Grove Village police set up an accident investigation scene and closed Arlington Heights Road in both directions between Biesterfield Road and the Village Grove Drive/Brandywine area. The area was closed to traffic until about 1:30 a.m. Thursday while Elk Grove Village Police Traffic Unit accident investigators worked at the scene.

The 84-year-old Elk Grove Village man was struck and killed apparently while hitting the front end and windshield of a Honda Odyssey as he walked across Arlington Heights Road near the east driveway of Classic Cinemas Elk Grove Theatre.

Police said a 45-year-old Arlington Heights woman was driving the blue Honda Odyssey northbound on Arlington Heights Road. Police initially did not know whether the victim was walking eastbound or westbound across the street. Witnesses said the force of the crash knocked off the man’s shoes, and that he was immediately unresponsive and bleeding from his face.

The driver of the minivan stopped immediately and cooperated with police. Elk Grove Village police said no traffic citation was issued, and no charges are pending against her. Police officers interviewed her while standing on the lawn of Christus Victor Lutheran Church at 1045 South Arlington Heights Road, and reported Thursday that there was no indication drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.

The stretch of road was not highly illuminated, and weather conditions were dry without precipitation. The accident occurred about one hour after a 7:44 p.m. sunset. The speed limit on the stretch of Arlington Heights Road near the accident scene is 35 mph.

The accident is at least the third vehicle vs pedestrian fatality in Elk Grove Village in 2019. On May 28, 2019, a female pedestrian was hit by a vehicle about 8:53 p.m. in the block of 500 Busse Road, and died from her injuries about one week later. On Thursday February 14, 2019 a 74 year-old male was hit in the head by the driver-side mirror of an SUV as it passed him near Walnut Lane and Maple Lane. The man died the next day following emergency surgery for his head injury.
