Palatine Shooting Suspect Apprehended in Guanajuato, Mexico, Detained in Montgomery County Near Houston and Awaiting Extradition to Cook County

Palatine shooting suspect from an April 28, 2019 shooting of two victims on Green Lane North in Palatine located in Guanajuato, Mexico with the help of Mexican Immigration Authorities, US Homeland Security Investigations, and the U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force.

After a comprehensive investigation by Palatine police investigators, and with the assistance of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, 19-year old Javier Ponce of the block of 1300 North Geneva Drive in Palatine, was identified and an arrest warrant for 2 counts of Attempted Murder was obtained. Upon learning that Javier Ponce had fled Illinois, the Palatine Police Investigators reached out to the U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force. Intelligence was later confirmed that Ponce had fled to Mexico. With the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), on Saturday July 20, 2019, the Mexican Immigration Authorities located Ponce in Guanajuato, Mexico. Ponce was taken into custody based on violations of Mexican Immigration Laws, and was deported back to the United States. Upon arrival to the United States, Ponce was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service and taken to an extradition hearing which he later waived. Ponce is currently being held at the Montgomery County Jail outside Houston, Texas to await extradition to Illinois. The investigation is still on-going and formal charges are pending.

On Sunday, April 28, 2019, at approximately 11:45 pm, Palatine police officers and firefighter/paramedics responded to the block of 1900 North Green Lane North in Palatine to a report of gunshots. At the scene, officers found two male victims with apparent gun shots wounds. Firefighter/paramedics assessed a 15-year-old victim, who was struck in the upper torso and foot; and a 19-year-old victim, who was struck in the hand and foot. Both victims were transported to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge by Palatine Fire Department firefighter/paramedics. Immediately after the shooting, the 15-year-old victim was in critical, but stable, condition following emergency surgery; and the 19-year-old victim was in the hospital — reported in “stable condition.”

Pursuant to the investigation by the Palatine Police Department, it was learned that both victims were standing near the entrance to an apartment building on N. Green Lane North waiting to complete a drug transaction when the offender walked towards them and began firing multiple shots. The shooter ran from the scene to a waiting vehicle in a nearby parking lot. The shooting is believed to be gang-related, and the victims were targeted.
