Book Driver provides a free pickup for donated books. Book Driver will be in the area, the first week of August if residents wish to participate. All you need to is visit our website to schedule and we will let you know which day to put books out.
Book Driver is a cottage business that uses a peer-to-peer model to create book jobs for book people, reduce carbon footprint, and give away books to 30 local organizations.
Started in 2013 in Colorado as a free book donation pickup service for library patrons, Book Driver expanded to Chicago in 2018. We process over 100,000 books per year, and plans to offer the service to other cities are in the works.
“I’m in Logan Square, so I’ve always been tuned into the west side of Chicagoland, and Elmhurst has been very welcoming,” said Emily Johnson, Book Driver co-founder. “We’ve been around over five years now and the momentum to rescue lost and forgotten books is growing,” said Johnson. “Nearly a million books are thrown away every day, so Friends of Library groups and schools have been the first on board.”
“Books will end up in the hands of the readers who need them today, instead of sitting on a shelf for years.” Johnson said. “Books need to be used or they just fall apart.”
Book Driver promotes all book donation services in Chicagoland such as Open Books and Bernie’s Book Bank, and works with local bookstores and cafes all over the city.
“We still focus on residential book pickups, but we’re expanding into working with local businesses like JMC Barbershop to help save more books!”
