16 INJURED WHEN TRAMPLED AT NAVY PIER

Three people were stabbed at Navy Pier around the time of the annual fireworks display Thursday night, and 13 others were hospitalized for injuries after being trampled a stampede when someone tossed a firecracker at Harry Caray’s Tavern. CBS 2’s Mugo Odigwe reports.

Chicago police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 10:00 p.m. Thursday July 4, 2019 to a report of multiple people stabbed and a person shot at Navy Pier, 600 East Grand Avenue.

Superior ambulance paramedics thought they brought a gunshot victim out of Navy Pier at about 10:34 p.m. The gunshot victim was initially believed to be about 16-18 years-old, but the gunshot was actually a puncture wound caused by running into a table. The patient was transported to Level I Trauma Center Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Initially three or four people were reported stabbed. On Thursday night at 11:32 p.m. CPD Chief Communications Officer Anthony Guglielmi tweeted that three people were stabbed and “reports of a shooting are not accurate.” One woman suffered a dislocated shoulder. Several other people were injured with “stampede”- or trampling-related injuries. Guglielmi also tweeted that 16 people “are hospitalized after being trampled during the exit.”

Chicago Fire Department activated an EMS Plan 1 and then an EMS Plan 2, which brings about 8-10 ambulances to a scene. Superior Ambulance paramedics were already on scene to standby for emergencies for the anticipated large crowd.

The stabbings occurred near the south entrance by the bus turn around at Navy Pier.

There were several stampede injuries also reported, and there was confusion whether shots were fired or whether fireworks were going off. Several injuries were reported near Harry Caray’s Tavern at Navy Pier. At Grand Avenue and Streeter Drive a pregnant female was reported trampled. Navy Pier had been closed at about 9:00 p.m. due to capacity limits.

The EMS Plan 2 was secured just before 11:00 p.m. as the situation and number of new patients stabilized.

According to Chicago Police all people hospitalized have injuries that have been “stabilized.”
