Family, friends and police from around the Midwest will begin saying goodbye to Illinois State Police Trooper Gerald Ellis Thursday. Ellis died after a driver going the wrong way crashed head on into him.

CBS Chicago’s Tara Molina looked at wrong-way crashes in Cook County in 2018 and found 30. There were 95 wrong-way crashes statewide. There were 11 fatal crashes.

Almost every wrong-way crash involves an impaired driver. The vast majority of drivers are impaired with drugs and alcohol.

Drunk, wrong-way driving became a felony on January 1, 2019 — the first of its kind in the United States. Rep. Mike Zalewski spearheaded the law.
