Lightfoot to face Toni Preckwinkle in April runoff, Tara Molina reports.
A runoff is likely between mayoral candidates Lori Lightfoot and Toni Preckwinkle for the top spot in the City of Chicago.
Lori Lightfoot, a Federal Prosecutor, a former Assistant United States Attorney, and a former Chicago Police Board President, led a city task force on police accountability, especially connected to the shooting of Laquan McDonald.
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle has served almost 30 years in political positions in and around Chicago. She was Alderman of the 4th Ward and is currently president of the Cook County Board. Many people didn’t think she had a chance after passing the repealed penny-per-ounce tax on sweetened beverages in 2017. In 2018, Preckwinkle became the first woman, and the first African American, elected to chair the Cook County Democratic Party. Before entering politics, Preckwinkle was a teacher in Chicago high schools.
Toni Preckwinkle claimed the second highest number of votes in the mayoral election and will face off with Lori Lightfoot in a runoff election [BAD AUDIO].
Bill Daley, the son of former Mayor Richard J. Daley and the brother of former Mayor Richard M. Daley, conceded about 10:00 p.m.
Bill Daley was President Barack Obama’s chief of staff, and also served as Secretary of Commerce under former President Bill Clinton. In 2013, Daley entered the race for governor but dropped out after four months.
