High Winds Cause Serious Roof Damage at Unoccupied Commercial Building on American Ln, Elk Grove Village

Scenes from American Lane just south of Devon Avenue in Elk Grove Village where parts of a roof were destroyed from high winds Sunday night, February 25, 2019.

Elk Grove Village police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 5:52 PM Sunday February 24, 2019 to a report of a roof collapse at a commercial building, 2450 American Lane Elk Grove Village, Il. Police and firefighter/paramedics from Engine 9’s crew on arrival reported a partial or full roof collapse, then confirmed only part of the roof was damaged. Closer examination by firefighters discovered that the roof deck was not pulled up. Only roofing materials and insulation materials were pulled up.

Battalion Chief Mike Keenan said that debris on the ground in front of the building was foam insulation. Wind pulled up a large amount roofing that was possibly made of foam and a rubber membrane.

Firefighters were standing by until the building owner arrived to make arrangements to secure the roof and arrange for repairs.
