Carpentersville police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 12:20 p.m. Tuesday February 19, 2019 to the scene of a crash on Route 31 between Lincoln Avenue and Miller Road. Upon arrival police and firefighters found a vehicle had gone off the road and was on its side against a tree near Raceway Woods Forest Preserve.

During extrication of the sole occupant of the vehicle, firefighter/paramedics had to lift the vehicle to get the driver out from underneath the car, according to Carpentersville Police Department.

The Kane County coroner was called to the scene to take the driver, who was pronounced dead, from the scene, police said.

The dead driver’s identity was released Wednesday as Ray Altamirano, age 24, of Carpentersville.

Before the crash, a witness had reported a vehicle speeding southbound on Route 31, according to Carpentersville Police Department.

The Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team is assisting Carpentersville police with the investigation. Route 31 was closed between 12:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Tuesday during an extended crash investigation. Initially it was believed that no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Members of the Kane County Office of Emergency Management assisted with traffic control during the extended accident investigation. The Speed Limit along the Route 31 two-lane highway is 50 MPH.

The driver’s identity was not initially released Tuesday.
