An Amber Alert from Boone County was activated about 1:58 p.m. Thursday October 18, 2018 for a 7-month-old girl taken on I-90 southeast of Rockford and east of Cherry Valley on Thursday morning October 18, 2018 about 10:40 a.m. The child was returned to a family member about 10 minutes after the AMBER Alert was issued.

State police said the baby was taken during an attempted traffic stop on westbound I-90 near mile marker 21.25 (Irene Road south east of Rockford). State troopers had stopped a 2013 silver Chevrolet Malibu about 10:40 a.m. for a reason that was not initially disclosed. During the traffic stop with the girl’s mother outside the car, a passenger refused to exit the car. Next, the suspect jumped into the driver’s seat, and fled with the vehicle and the 7-month old girl still inside the car.

Illinois State police issued the Amber Alert about 1:58 p.m. Thursday, a little over three hours after the girl was reported taken. By about 2:09 p.m. police received a report that an older man with gray hair dropped off the child to a family member in Chicago at Pete’s Fresh Market — a large grocery store at Western Avenue and Madison Street (2333 West Madison Street). The Amber Alert was canceled about 2:20 p.m.

Police on Thursday afternoon were investigating the case and looking for the suspect nicknamed “Boopa” and the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu, which was considered a stolen vehicle. The three were initially heading to Madison Chicago.

This is an early report, some content not yet confirmed by police authorities.
