Video (elapsed 16:25) showing end of extrication, high-speed crash scene safety zone, scene cleanup, and hazards associated with crash scene operations on westbound I-90 near Route 53.
Illinois State police and Arlington Heights and Schaumburg firefighter/paramedics responded about 5:25 PM Friday March 30, 2018 to a report of a rollover extrication crash, 42.057232, -88.024970 (WB I-90 and Route 53 Rolling Meadows, IL). Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that the crash occurred near Meacham Road, but the crash actually occurred just east of Route 53/I-290.
Schaumburg’s Ambulance 52 crew on arrival reported they did not have access to from Route 53, as they were too far west of the crash. Schaumburg firefighters also reported Arlington Heights firefighters were already on the scene. Schaumburg Truck 52’s crew stopped on the ramp from northbound Route 53 to westbound I-90, just west of the crash scene to see if it was necessary to walk any extrication tools to the scene to assist Arlington Heights firefighter/paramedics.
A second ambulance was requested to respond to the scene at 5:48 p.m. At least two people were transported to the hospital.
A significant number of crashes have occurred in this area before, but this is believed to be the first serious rollover crash in the segment of I-90 that was recently changed to a 70 MPH Speed Limit from 55 MPH.
The Illinois Tollway board approved a new speed limit of 70 MPH for passenger cars for Interstate 90 between Mount Prospect Road and Randall Road in Elgin. The 24-mile segment of tollway between Mount Prospect Road and Randall Road in Elgin was re-assigned a speed limit from 55 mph to 70 mph late Tuesday March 27, 2018. For buses, the speed limit will be 65 mph, and for commercial trucks the new limit will be 60 mph.
There is concern among motorists and safety experts that the new, higher speed limit will increase the number of crashes and the severity of crashes on I-90 from Mount Prospect Road to Randall Road.
