Serious Natural Gas Leak Near Bed, Bath & Beyond at Randhurst, Elmhurst Rd, Mount Prospect

Mount Prospect police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 9:33 PM Friday January 5, 2018 to a report of a gas leak at Bed Bath & Beyond at Randhurst, 1057 North Elmhurst Road Mount Prospect, Il. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report of a gas leak with an inside odor and hissing noise.

Battalion Chief 3 on arrival requested police near the natural gas source to move back away from the gas leak about 100 feet.

Battalion Chief 3 reported a high volume line blowing gas freely at the scene by 9:45 p.m.

Firefighters are monitoring the air for Lower Explosive Level (LEL) and are waiting for Nicor to arrive.

Initially firefighters were unable to shut off the gas, but declared the gas was shut off by 10:09 p.m. Firefighters were set up at a fire hydrant in case of ignition. The cold weather also added to difficulty of operations, especially regarding the extent that firefighters would access water at the fire hydrant for a standby operation.

Air temperature at 9:51 p.m. at the O’Hare International NWS station was recorded at 3°F with a wind chill of -11°F. Wind direction was NW 9 MPH.

The Bed Bath & Beyond store at 10:20 p.m. has no gas or heat to the store location. If the situation is prolonged, frozen and burst pipes are a risk to consider and mitigate. The overnight low is forecast at -4°F from about 5a.m. to 7 am. Saturday morning.
