NBC News Fires Matt Lauer Tuesday Night After Inappropriate Sexual Behavior Complaint Monday

Matt Lauer was fired from NBC News after an employee filed a complaint about “inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace,” the network announced.

Matt Lauer was informed before he went to bed Tuesday night that he was fired for “inappropriate sexual behavior” and Lauer’s co-anchor Savannah Guthrie made the announcement Wednesday morning at the top of the show by reading a statement from NBC News chairman Andy Lack.

The New York Post’s Page Six is reporting Matt Lauer allegedly sexually assaulted a female NBC staffer during the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014, sources told Page Six.

CNN’s Senior Media Correspondent Brian Stelter emphasized that Matt Lauer WAS the Today show, and the engine for one of the single most profitable programs on television news. Stelter said both the New York Times and Variety were working on stories regarding Matt Lauer’s conduct. One of the New York Time reporters that was working on the Harvey Weinstein story is also working on the Matt Lauer story.

CNN Media Analyst Bill Carter reported that Matt Lauer must have acknowledged the accusations.

Matt Lauer has been with the Today show as an official co-anchor since January 6, 1997, replacing Bryant Gumbel. Previously he had on-camera presence with WNBC, news reading for The Today Show, co-hosting on Weekend Today, anchoring on NBC News at Sunrise, filling in for Tom Brokaw on NBC Nightly News and filling in for Bryant Gumbel on the Today Show.

TMZ reports that Katie Couric said Matt Lauer “pinched her on the ass” a lot during their 9-year run on the “Today” show. Katie appeared on Andy Cohen’s “Watch What Happens Live” back in 2012, and during a segment — Plead the Fifth — Andy asked about Matt’s most annoying habit. Katie Couric’s answer was never investigated.
