Fatal Crash Involving Car and CTA Bus on Madison St Near Washtenaw Ave Kills 4, Chicago

Chicago police firefighters and paramedics responded about 5:53 a.m. to car crash involving a CTA bus on Madison Street near Washtenaw. The death toll rose from one to four by 8:30 a.m.

Four people were trapped in a burning car that was severely damaged in the crash. The first person was extricated from the smoking car by about 6:00 a.m. with Chicago Fire Department’s Battalion Chief reporting three people still trapped and requesting an EMS Plan 1.

Two more patients were extricated by 6:02 a.m. and the fourth patient was extricated by 6:17 a.m.

At least four people eventually died at hospital, and four others were transported with injuries because of the crash Chicago’s West Side Garfield Park neighborhood. The crash was reported at 2659 W. Madison Street, about 6 blocks west of the United Center — about halfway between the United Center and the Garfield Park Conservatory.

A total of seven ambulances responded to the crash when two additional ambulances were requested for two people that were on board the CTA bus.

CFD transported two patients Code Red to Mount Sinai Hospital.

CFD transported two patients Code Red to Level I Trauma Center Cook County Stroger.

CFD transported one patient Code Yellow to Level I Trauma Center Cook County Stroger.

CFD transported one patient Code Yellow to St Mary’s.

CFD transported two patients Code Green to St Mary’s.

CTA #20 Madison bus was temporarily rerouted in both directions around the scene, the CTA said.
