Ask Paul B: Fourteen Shot (Update: 35 Shot, 4 Dead) in Chicago Before the Weekend Is Over?

#ad▼

Hi Paul B Readers,

I MUST bring this up, and it will be a recurring theme, as long as I am alive. I was about to enjoy the day, driving to work out (or just talk to peeps and write my column…) when I heard the tail end of a WBBM news broadcast. It was delivered in a monotone voice AFTER the baseball scores and weather, and there it was …” fourteen people were shot in Chicago over the weekend.” This is Sunday morning, kids. The weekend isn’t even over yet! Am I to presume that the number could be twenty by midnight? If the weather is good, might it be higher? Do murderers like to stay inside when it’s raining out? Do their guns work as well? Is the winter time less violent because of the lousy weather? Are there survivors from those that were shot? How many were women or children? How many shooters were older than nineteen? Were there “innocents” shot during this thirty-eight hour killing spree? What IS the record for a Chicago weekend of violence? I’m a numbers guy, and I believe that I was just so sickened by this violent “stat,” that I actually tried to distract myself from the real facts. FOURTEEN PEOPLE SHOT! No, not in a week, and no, not in a month (like Japan, Canada, Norway, Bogota, Lima or New Brunswick.) These fourteen shootings took place in less than forty hours. By the way… How many were shot in Baghdad or Kabul in thirty eight hours? … where there is an actual WAR. What “place” did Chicago earn on this list? Think about my message here, kids. I am NOT JOKING about this. I am still very jarred by this stat. How do YOU cope? Or are the baseball scores more important? Let me know your thoughts.
