Freight Train Derailment in Smithboro, Illinois in Bond County, East of St. Louis

Firefighters and police in east central Illinois responded about 5:00 a.m. to a freight train derailment near the intersection of Main Street and E. City Route 40 in Smithboro. Greenville firefighters, Greenville police departments, and the Bond County Sheriff’s Department are mutual aid for Smithboro firefighters.

Tanker cars are overturned, but there are no reports of any leaks. No injuries reported.

Smithboro is just north of Interstate 70, about 50 miles northeast of St. Louis.
