An off-duty Chicago police officer about 7:00 a.m. Saturday heard a loud crashing noise as an alarm activated in his residential garage in the 7900 block of South Jeffery Boulevard. The police officer got dressed and drove around to the alley to the source of the noise, and discovered a man using a van to try to ram the garage door open. The police officer got out of his car and identified himself as a police officer and told two men in the van that they were under arrest. The driver of the van then aimed the van at the police officer, hit the police officer with the van, and proceeded to hit the police officer’s vehicle. The van driver further endangered the police officer, who was knocked to the ground — driving the van in forward and reverse. The police officer fire two shots toward the van and fatally wounded the driver. The victim was transported to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Christ Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The second suspect fled, but was captured in the neighborhood by other police officers.
