Chicago-Arlington Heights Snowfall: New: 5.5 Inches, Snow Cover 7.5 Inches

New snowfall for Chicagoland area and Arlington Heights Friday, January 20, 2012
A total of 5.5 inches of snow fell in Arlington Heights from 9:30 a.m. Friday until 7:00 p.m. Friday. The heaviest snowfall period occurred from 11:30 a.m. until about 5:00 p.m. Light snow is still falling at 7:00 p.m. The trailing edge of precipitation was passing Rockford at 7:15 p.m.

Snow cover at the start of the winter storm was about 2.0 inches. Snow cover at 7:00 p.m. was 7.5 inches. The main area of snowfall settled a little further south over the metropolitan area compared to the forecast. Heavier snow amounts are being measured in Naperville (6.5″), Joliet (6.1″), Bolingbrook (6.7″). Winnetka measured 5.2″ and Zion only 3.8″ at about 7:00 p.m.

The snow is dry and fluffy — not good packing for snowmen and snowballs. Forecast discussion at Friday afternoon favored snow ratios between 14:1 and 15:1.
