Phone Distracted Driving Charge: Kelly Luch, 23, Drives Into Man Changing Tire on Route 53

UPDATE SEP 02 2011 — Marcin Minpsuj, of Hawthorn Woods died at Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital on Thursday afternoon, September 1, 2011.

Rolling Meadows firefighter/paramedics and Illinois State Police troopers responded about 7:35 p.m. Monday, August 1, 2011 to a two vehicle crash at northbound Route 53, just south of Euclid Avenue. Firefighter/paramedics received a report that a man was possibly trapped as he was changing a tire as his vehicle was hit by another vehicle. The vehicle was driven by Kelly Luch. He was reported to be conscious on the scene. The crash was reported to be north of Kirchoff Road in the northbound lanes of Route 53.

Paramedics found a 39-year-old man from Hawthorne Woods next to his pickup truck with Kelly Luch’s vehicle wedged under the pickup truck. The man received serious traumatic injuries and was transported directly to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. Witnesses that approached the accident to help reported that it was immediately obvious the man had serious injuries.


Illinois State Police troopers learned that the woman was scrolling through her wireless phone, when she lost control of her vehicle and hit a semi-trailer truck in the center lane of northbound Route 53. Her vehicle then veered toward the center median and became wedged under the victim’s pickup truck.Marcin Minpsuj was changing the tire to his truck and was then pinned between the center median barrier and his pickup truck.

Palatine firefighter/paramedics assisted Rolling Meadows firefighter/paramedics.

Kelly Luch, 23, of Buffalo Grove, was cited for improper lane usage, driving on the shoulder, and operating an electronic device while driving (texting while driving).
