National Christmas Tree Snaps in High Winds

The National Christmas Tree is no more. The Colorado blue spruce that stood on the White House grounds since 1978 was toppled Saturday morning by high winds.

Winds started gusting over 40 mph about 8:00 a.m. Saturday. The strongest gusts hit just before 3:00 p.m. when winds whipped up brushfires that burned homes, knocked out power in the Washington D.C. area, and snapped the National Christmas Tree.

More than 100 wildfires were reported in Virginia.
