Foot Pursuit, Arrests After Short Vehicle Chase with Subject Wanted for ‘Shots Fired’ Investigation

Scene near Maude and Yale, and Maude and Harvard Avenue after police pursuit ended in the 1600 block of Yale Court with a red Dodge Dakota — minor damage showing apparently from hitting uninvolved cars during the police pursuit.

A police officer in an unmarked car initiated a traffic stop about 3:50 p.m. Friday on Kennicott just south of Palatine Road to investigate a subject that was wanted for questioning after a ‘shots fired’ call reported last Monday.

The vehicle fit a description of a vehicle that was reported to have driven by an address in the 1200 block of East Northwest Highway. A shot was reported to have come from that vehicle. It is not confirmed whether the subject in the vehicle was wanted for questioning for another reason.

At first the driver of a red Dodge Dakota that matched the description of the vehicle from Monday night, appeared to be stopping for police. Next, the driver took off, heading south on Kennicott Avenue and then west on Northwest Highway. The pursuit involving the unmarked vehicle was terminated for safety reasons. As marked police units arrived in the area the pursuit was resumed. The red pickup truck hit at least two cars during the pursuit — apparently causing minor damage. Both subjects were presumed armed, because of the call Monday night and possibly because of information known about at least one of the subjects.

The pickup truck headed north on Wilke Road from Northwest Highway all the way to Palatine frontage, winding down some side streets. The driver eventually turned down Yale Court in the 1600 block near North Yale Avenue. With nowhere to drive, the driver and the passenger fled on foot. The driver headed south, and the passenger headed east toward Patton Elementary School. His tracks were followed in the snow, and he was apprehended at Maude Avenue.

The driver was still at large, but apparently ran to a residence where he was staying in the 1500 block of North Harvard Avenue. Neighbors saw police running through yards and down the street. Police apprehended the driver at the residence on Harvard Avenue. A weapon was found at the house. No information is available whether a weapon was found in the car.

Both suspects were transported in custody to Arlington Heights police headquarters. The red Dodge Dakota was towed to the police garage for inventory and investigation.
