Dear Paul B,
I read your column, and you never discuss politics, and I don’t know why. I am Egyptian and living in Chicago with two brothers and a sister. My mother moved here when she separated from my Dad. They were not allowed to divorce, so it is merely a separation. I am a moderate and I don’t know why so many people blame Mubarak. Our country was not ready for democracy and is several years away. I only hope that the right wing element, which is very significant in Egypt, will not demonstrate their strength to the many Egyptians who fear them. There will be bloodshed, and until the U.S. learns that we must be educated first, democracy will not succeed here. We need a strong and fair military so that we can stand up to these religious fanatics first. We will then show up in great numbers to vote for a “Free Egypt.” Thanks for your time.
I typically do not choose to take sides in politics, but as a proud American, I can subscribe to democracy for everyone. The freedoms that we enjoy here in the USA are awesome, and I do not take them for granted. I can only hope and pray that you too some day will enjoy many of these democratic processes as well. Egypt has decided to stand up to the government, and I can readily admit that the US (who defended Mubarak for much too long) must support your ceaseless efforts to enjoy free elections and a democratic system. This is only the beginning for your people, and I pray that it will be a peaceful transformation. Good luck.
