Stanford Legend and friend Michael Dotterer sent a text one hour before tonight’s Orange Bowl game, reading “GO CARDINAL,” so I gave him a call. Dotterer, one of only 24 decorated two sport athletes in Stanford’s Hall of Fame, asked me to predict the score of the game. “40 to 10, Cardinal,” was my response.

Stanford won 40 to 12, under a 4-touchdown performance by Quarterback Andrew Luck.

No one, not even Stanford, expected this kind of performance from The Cardinal.

The Stanford Marching band or Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band (LSJUMB) is the most untraditional marching band of all higher education. They are known for antics that have caused them to be banned from many venues, including disciplinary action for lampooning Catholicism and the Irish at a game against Notre Dame in 1997. Disappointing to many, they were banned from performing at the Orange Bowl 2011 halftime show. They’re also known for marching around campus at the sites of away games the night before competition. In 1983, they marched in front of bars and other venues in Champaign-Urbana the night before Illinois beat Stanford 17-7. Fighting Illini Head Coach Mike White was an assistant coach at Stanford from 1964-1971.

The Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band (LSJUMB) is the student marching band of Stanford University. Billing itself as “The World’s Largest Rock and Roll Band”, the Stanford Band performs at sporting events, student activities, and other functions. Technically, it is not actually a marching band, but rather a scatter band.
