VIDEO: Specialized Technical Rescue Team response for car crash into school building at Willow Grove Kindergarten Center, 777 Checker Drive.
Buffalo Grove Fire Department requested an Extra Alarm about 1:35 a.m. Monday for structural collapse technicians to do shoring after a car rolled over and crashed into Willow Grove School, 777 Checker Drive in Buffalo Grove. Firefighters originally responded about 1:10 a.m. for an accident with injuries — car vs. a school building. The crashed into the front of the school, near the circle drive.
Fire departments from Arlington Heights, Grayslake, Lake Forest, Lake Zurich, Libertyville, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Long Grove, Newport, Palatine, Waukegan, Wheeling and others assisted Buffalo Grove Fire Department. Technical Rescue Team technicians, including the Lake & McHenry Counties SRT, responded to the scene to inspect and secure the building. Lumber pieces, fit at the scene, were used to stabilize the area of the school that was impacted. Specialized firefighters known as Technical Rescue Technicians were seen measuring, customizing and fitting lumber for the school building structure.
Firefighters worked at the scene while the air temperature dropped from 12°F to 10°F in winds of about 20 mph with gusts to 32 mph (Wind Chill: -10°F to -15°F).
ALL School District 96 schools will be open today, Monday, December 13, 2010. Regarding Willow Grove, a vehicle veered off the road and hit the building during the night. The building is safe and school will be in session. Willow Grove parents dropping off their students will be directed by administrators.
The Lake & Mchenry County SRT Specialized Response Teams) are emergency resonders who are trained for specialty rescues and recoveries. The specialized rescue categories include Hazardous Materials, Dive Rescue, Structural Collapse, Trench Rescue, Confined Space, High Angle Rescue, Wildland Firefighting and Side Scan Sonar.
