Quick knockdown of an apartment fire in a kitchen on Hawthorne Street.

Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 10:25 AM Monday to a report of an apartment fire on the second floor in the 1100 block of West Hawthorne Street. Police arrived on the scene first and reported smoke showing. As firefighters gained access, they did not know if the apartment was occupied.

Firefighters discovered a fire in an oven or on the stove, and quickly knocked down the fire. Firefighers searched the apartment and found no people, but did find two cats that were apparently killed by smoke inhalation.

An animal welfare officer was called to the scene, and a fire investigator and building inspector were called to the scene.

The fire was extinguished by 10:45 a.m.

Rolling Meadows Fire Department assisted Arlington Heights firefighters.
