Earthquake 7.4 Magnitude 390 Miles West of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake hit northern Sumatra, Indonesia at 12:49 CDT on Sunday May 9, 2010. Tsunami alert has been posted for the area. The area includes the province of Aceh. The earthquake epicenter was 135 miles SSE of Banda Aceh, Sumatra, Indonesia. Some reports of homes damaged.

The people of Aceh were affected by a Tsunami on December 26, 2004, when the Indian Ocean surged over the northern tip of Sumatra after a 9.3-magnitude quake split the seabed to the island’s west.

Indonesia was the nation hardest hit, with at least 168,000 people killed out of more than 220,000 who lost their lives across the region.
