Police, firefighters, and paramedics from Arlington Heights responded about 9:25 a.m. Friday, April 23, 2021 to a report of a garbage truck fire at the Saint James Church parking lot, 831 North Arlington Heights Road in Arlington Heights. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters led out with a 2 1/2-inch line, and eventually used two hose lines on the fire — one line predominantly to keep the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) tanks cool, and one line for the garbage load that was dumped onto the parking lot surface. Firefighters parked Fire Engine 2 a significant distance away from the garbage truck as a precaution in case the CNG vented and ignited.

After the fire was extinguished, the dump was transferred by a public works end loader to a large truck dumpster that Groot brought to the scene. Garbage service by Groot was not significantly delayed following the fire.

The cause of the fire was unknown. The garbage truck was in service for garbage pickup when the fire occurred.

Apparently an Arlington Heights resident improperly disposed a propane tank in their garbage. Propane tanks are not supposed to be discarded in garbage pickup or for recycling pickup. As a precaution, the propane tank was also cooled down with a water stream.
