Abigail Horan, 16, of Arlington Heights was recognized as a distinguished finalist as a top youth volunteer in 2009 by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards — a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism. She was a distinguished finalist in the category of “Aiding the Disadvantaged.” She shares the honor with nine other Illinois high school and middle level youth volunteers in Illinois and 234 distinguished finalists and 102 state honorees nationwide.
Abigail Horan, a sophomore at Rolling Meadows High School in Rolling Meadows, was only 10 years old when she created “Double T,” an organization that has since provided more than 2,600 hygiene kits for homeless people, foster children, and the elderly. Abigail also puts on an annual backyard carnival that has raised more than $10,000 to support cancer research and other charitable causes, and has collected toys for hospitalized children and books for disadvantaged students.
In 2006, Abigail Horan, then a seventh-grader at South Middle School, was awarded The Young Champion Heart of Gold Award after she started the charity called “Double T,” which distributes toothbrushes and toothpaste to the homeless, and women and children in shelters.
