Mount Prospect Southside Hit Hard by Storm, Power Outage

MOUNT PROSPECT AUG 2007 STORM TOUR PHOTO GALLERY…

Mount Prospect’s south side was hit especially hard by high winds
Thursday afternoon. Mount Prospect Fire Department has set up a
prolonged command with storm aftermath operations inspecting grids in
neighborhoods. In the aftermath residents, fire crews and police
officers discovered trees on houses, trees on cars, obstructed streets,
utility lines torn down and even snapped utility poles. The worst damage
and heavily concentrated damage seemed to be just north of Golf Road and
parallel along Golf Road on both sides of Elmhurst Road Route 83.

Nine power and utiliy poles snapped or tilted and fell northward along Dempster just east of Busse in Mount Prospect.

Storm Power Outage Update for Arlington Heights, Northwest Suburbs of Chicago, District 214 Closed

Lines downed by trees at Pine and Hawthorne in Arlington Heights.

The aftermath of Thursday’s storms continues to affect life in the Chicagoland suburbs. All schools in District 214 and the Forest View Educational Center will be closed today due to a loss of electricity in several buildings.

Commonwealth Edison is unable to determine when power will be restored due to the widespread devastation caused by Thursday’s severe weather conditions. Consequently, District 214 and all schools are closed.

Twelve-month administrators and supervisors are expected to report to work. Northwest Suburban High School District 214 canceled all outdoor after-school activities Thursday after losing power at Prospect High School, Rolling Meadows High School and Buffalo Grove High School.

District 25 is not reporting closings.

For emergency closing information for all schools in the suburbs, check the Tribune/WGN Emergency Closing Center.

Fire departments are responding to numerous reports of lines down, trees on fire from power line contact, service drops sparking and arcing, and roof and window damage.

Some residents are getting quotes from ComEd that power may take up to 72 hours to be restored.
Police are still busy with traffic management from stoplights that are not functioning due to power failures and from flooded intersections. Some intersections in downtown Arlington Heights are still without power.

Many residents are still waking to find trees with hazards from broken limbs or trees which have damaged cars and buildings.

Some residents and businesses in Arlington Heights have had to board up windows that were damaged by the storms Thursday afternoon and Thursday night.

Last night all stoplights along Euclid Avenue were not functioning. All lights along Golf Road west of Arlington Heights Road were not functioning. Meijer (847-690-1500) and stores on the south side of Golf near Algonquin Rd & Golf Rd in Rolling Meadows were without power. Route 53 and Dundee stoplights also without power. Westbound Dundee was backed up from Route 53 to Arlington Heights Road at 10:00 a.m. Friday.

On the northside of Arlington Heights Kohl’s Department was closed without power and 24-hour XSPORT Fitness on Dundee was also closed without power and still without power Friday morning.

Large trees or branches obstructed streets at Gettysburg and Ladd, Hawthorne and Pine, Beverly and Fairview, Hawthorne and Beverly, Seegers Road between Arlington Heights Road and Goebbert, along Campbell near Ridge Avenue. Public works are working this morning to clear raining branches and maintain drainage for flood streets and yards.

Dana Mangi, Prospect High School Grad, Murdered in Wrigleyville Apartment

Patrick Ford, of 1043 W. Grace St., Apt. 2,  was denied bond as he appeared in Violence Court Tuesday afternoon and was charged with the fatal stabbing and strangulation of
Dana E. Mangi, 25, of the 600 block of North Carlyle Lane in Arlington Heights.

Dana Mangi, a Prospect High School graduate was found dead about 5:30 a.m. Sunday at a Wrigleyville apartment at 1000 W. Grace St [MAP/SAT].  Patrick Ford was found on the scene apparently with self-inflicted cut wounds. Ford and Mangi were acquaintances and Ford allegedly confessed to killing Mangi. Dana Mangi was enrolled at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota for this fall semester.

A series of assaults in the Lakeview neighborhood is thought to be unrelated to this crime.

Prayers will be said at 9:15 a.m. Friday at the Oehler Funeral Home, 2000 E. Northwest Hwy. in Arlington Heights. A 10 a.m. Mass is scheduled Friday at St. James Church, 831 N. Arlington Heights Road in Arlington Heights. Entombment will be in All Saints Mausoleum in Des Plaines.

UPDATE: A 150-car funeral procession traveled with police escort from the Arlington Heights Police Department from St. James Church to All Saints Mausoleum in Des Plaines Friday morning. Part of the travel passed through storm-ravaged Mount Prospect where police officers — who were already managing busy intersections with failed stoplights — gave a respectful clear pass to Dana’s procession.
