Shields Township is located in east-central Lake County, Illinois, and includes the Lake Michigan shoreline as its east border. The population was 39,062 at the 2010 census.


Shields Township covers an area of 17.7 square miles. There are no major lakes in Shields Township, but there are about 6.5 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline on the east border. The Skokie River, flowing south, rises from a flat area (historically a wetland, now the Willow Glen Golf Club) on the west side of the city of North Chicago and just northeast of the intersection of US 41 and IL-137 of in Shields township. The Skokie River flows south into West Deerfield Township and Moraine Township in Lake County and into Cook County. The North Branch of the Chicago River passes through the southwest corner of Shields Township in the Middlefork Savanna Forest Preserve, which is just east of the Chicago Bears Headquarters Halas Hall in Libertyville Township.
