In Chicago’s Northwest Suburbs, US 14 is known as Northwest Highway due to its direction and because it runs parallel to the old Chicago and North Western railroad (now Union Pacific and Metra Northwest Line.), but is also known as Ronald Reagan Highway. Locals still call it Northwest Highway. The roadway was originally called Northwest Highway from Chicago to New Ulm, Minnesota, and some street signs in New Ulm and Chicago, and in towns in between still show the old designation. Here is where it gets real confusing: Northwest Highway disconnects from the US 14 designation and routes southeast from the point where Miner Street turns into Dempster Street at the Des Plaines-Park Ridge border. Northwest Highway continues through the Chicago neighborhoods of Edison Park, Norwood Park, Gladstone Park, and ends in Jefferson Park.
In Jefferson Park Northwest Highway takes a little jog coinciding with Milwaukee Avenue, then has a short segment between Milwaukee Avenue off of Carmen Avenue and then ends at Long Avenue and Argyle Street in the Jefferson Park neighborhood of Chicago.
