Golf Road or Illinois Route 58 is also known as Evanston-Elgin Road for most of its route. Illinois 58 is a state highway in northeast Illinois that runs from McCormick Boulevard, which is just east of US 41 (Skokie Boulevard) and just east of I-94 in Skokie, west to Illinois Route 25 (Liberty Street) in Elgin — a distance of 27.88 miles (44.87 km).
Near the eastern terminus east of McCormick Boulevard, Golf Road becomes Emerson Street and then Elgin Road to Lake Michigan, just south of Northwestern University. Golf Road is named after the very small town of Golf, Illinois that the route passes through between Niles and Glenview.
Near the western terminus, starting in Elgin, the road is called Summit Street. Just east of Shales Parkway in Elgin.
In Skokie there is no interchange where Golf Road passes under I-94, just west of Westfield Old Orchard shopping center.
In Des Plaines and unincorporated Maine Township to the northeast, Il-58 connects to I-294 with a partial interchange, just east of the south driveway of Oakton Community College. There are ramps from eastbound and westbound Golf Road to northbound I-294; and there is a ramp from southbound I-294 to the parallel East River Road, which connects just south at Golf Road in an intersection with traffic signals.
In Des Plaines Illinois 58 is constructed in a traffic circle that intersects with Wolf Road, Broadway Street and State Street — just north of a US 14 (Northwest Highway) overpass and Union Pacific Railroad/Metra Northwest Line overpass. The feeder roads are accessible via a two-lane traffic circle north of the overpass, which is one of the busiest traffic circles in the Chicago metropolitan area.
The junction of Illinois 58 and Illinois Route 72 (Higgins Road) in Hoffman Estates form one of the only six-lane by six-lane sharply angled intersections in the State of Illinois. Left turns used to be prohibited from westbound Golf Road onto eastbound Higgins Road and eastbound Golf Road onto westbound Higgins Road because of the sharp angles, but recent road construction has made a separate lane for doing this in both directions.
IL-58 is a four-lane road for most of its length, and six lanes through Hoffman Estates and Schaumburg — a very high-traffic corridor. The only section that is not multilane is where the roadway is just east of Waverly Drive in Elgin to just west of Barrington Road in Hoffman Estates.
