CNET Senior Editor James Kim, 35, wife Kati (30 years-old), and daughters Penelope (4 years-old) and Sabine (7 months-old), were traveling down Interstate-5 Saturday, November 25 from Portland, Oregon, on their way to Gold Beach, Oregon. They intended to drive via Oregon State Highway 42, but after missing the turn, decided to head west from Grants Pass on Bear Camp Road (NF-23), which is also known as Merlin Galice Road [MAP/SATELLITE].
A cell phone tower in Glendale, Oregon picked up a signal from one of the Kims’ mobile phones at around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 26, 2006. Check this SATELLITE IMAGE to understand the terrain of this area. The body of James Kim, who died of hypothermia, was located on Wednesday, December 6 about one mile from his stranded car. He had walked up to eight to sixteen miles in a circular route. The rest of Kim’s family had been found alive on Monday, December 4. They were found near their stranded car near the Rogue River, in the area of Bear Camp Viewpoint, off Bear Camp Road. The area is west of Interstate 5, northwest of Grants Pass. The family ran the car engine to keep warm and burned the car tires at night to stay warm.
