Distracted Cellphone Use Suspected in Fatal High Speed Head-on Crash on Route 176 in Union Near Marengo

McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, Marengo and Union Fire Protection Districts responded about 9:39 p.m. Wednesday January 17, 2018 to a report of a head-on crash on Route 176 east of Union Road in unincorporated Union.

The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Jeep, a 24-year-old male, was transported by Marengo paramedics to Centegra Hospital-Huntley, and later transferred by Lifeline medical helicopter, based in Rockford, to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. He was listed in critical but stable condition.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said that a 2005 Honda Civic, driven by a 27-year-old woman from Rockford, was headed westbound on Route 176 when the vehicle veered into the oncoming lane of traffic where and crashed into an eastbound 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by the 24-year-old man from Marengo.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office stated that both drivers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash and that cell phone use was a contributing factor in the crash. Initially, alcohol or drugs as factors in the crash are unknown. The head-on crash speed for each vehicle was estimated at 55-65 MPH.

The crash is being investigated by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
