Chicago Bears Name Chiefs Offensive Coordinator Matt Nagy as New Head Coach

The Chicago Bears announced Monday January 8, 2018 that they have hired Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy as their new head coach.

The Bears Nagy announcement is one week after the firing of former Bears head coach John Fox, who was booted after a 14-34 record in three seasons for a .292 winning percentage.

Fox’s record is the second-lowest in team history. The Chicago Bears were 5-11 last season and haven’t finished above .500 since firing Lovie Smith.

Nagy, age 39, is a former quarterback at Delaware and the Arena Football League. During his past 10 seasons he worked under Andy Reid in Philadelphia and Kansas City. Nagy did not call plays until late season. Nagy will be trying to develop No. 2 overall draft pick Mitchell Trubisky.

The Kansas City Chiefs won the AFC West, but blew an 18-point halftime lead in a playoff loss to Tennessee on Saturday, January 6, 2018. The Bears met with Nagy on Sunday and wasted little time hiring him away from the Chiefs.

Interviewing outside the club, the Chicago Bears met with Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo, offensive coordinators Pat Shurmur (Minnesota) and Josh McDaniels (New England), Vikings defensive coordinator George Edwards.

Looking inside the club, the Bears Chicago interviewed defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.
